A breath of fresh air

I arrived at Worksop College with a new Head - CHD Everett - in September 1970. The college was stuck in a time warp and CHD did not waste any time setting about a mini revolution.

Changes came fast and furious - and then, in 1973, Mr Cleasby arrived.

He was very different. Humorous. Acerbic. And someone who - to my mind - set out to help and inspire the pupils he taught. He inspired me. If I talk about my school days, he is the teacher I speak about. I remember the mannerisms, the way he would use humour to make a point which made it memorable.

For me, he was a pupil's teacher. I loved his lessons. His method of teaching meant I attained my French O'Level before my English! Always a source of amusement for both of us.

Later in life I met him for a drink when he was visiting Barnes and he had not changed a jot. It was a wonderful two hours. We were never able to coordinate our diaries to repeat this and that now is a true regret.

Thank you Martyn. You helped make me the person I am today.
